Only in Jesus Can We Find Real, Lasting Peace

There is a rest that we can sometimes find in our lives that is peaceful and refreshing, but it is usually not a lasting rest or peace. Sitting quietly, listening to a mountain river flow; a steady, gentle breeze blowing through the trees; or a bird flitting about, singing a song – all of these things may cause the mind and body to pause, relax, and reflect on the wonders of our world, on simple things, and on simpler times. Maybe this kind of peace and relaxation comes to some when they’re sitting on a porch watching the sun set over the mountains or a sunrise over a lake.
Wherever and however we find these moments of quiet rest and peace, they refresh us. Sometimes they even awaken us to things we’ve never felt before; feelings of awe and reverence that well up in us the first time we experience the vast beauty and sounds of the ocean or the first time we see a great mountain reaching up to the sky. These are beautiful and wondrous things to behold. They touch our very core and bring a burst of joy to our hearts and a desire to express the way we feel in that moment!
Our God created this wonderful world with all of its beauty, glory, and majesty, then He said, ”It is good.” Then He rested. He ceased His creating and enjoyed with pleasure that which He created. This wonderful God, who created all these wondrous things, did it for His pleasure, yet we are privileged to enjoy them also because in an act of profound love, He created us and placed us in the middle of them.
Now, just as the body and mind need rest, so does the spirit. Our spirits are constantly bombarded with the enemy’s darts. His voice often speaks to us about negative, destructive, and hateful things. His lies poison our souls if we allow his words to take root in our hearts. We may never have an enemy in the flesh, but our spirits are continually warred upon by the god of this world (John 12:31, 2 Corinthians 2:4. Ephesians 2:2), so we wonder, how we can ever have rest and peace.
Only through the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and the touch of the hand of Jesus, can we find these things:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:4-9)
The Lord Jesus, through His Holy Spirit, is always calling us to Him. He’s calling us to come to talk and commune with Him and let His touch, His voice, and His peace wash over us and refresh us! Only when we give up struggling with how to solve our problems and how to accomplish all that must be done and wrap ourselves in the garment of praise can we find the rest, peace, and assurance that only God can give.
His Spirit refreshes us. His voice comforts us. His hand guides us to places inside and around us of reflection, inspiration, growth, strength, and praise. Rest in the Lord! Discover the awakening of your spirit when you see through His eyes all the beauty of Holiness! Let Him reveal to you all the creative power in His hands! Let His touch bring new strength and new vision so that you might continue to passionately pursue God’s will in His good pleasure!
